Elev8 Studio takes Pilates to the extreme with the Lagree Fitness Method.
Move over, Pilates. Lagree–a new fitness class in BGC’s Elev8 Studio–focuses on muscle toning and sculpting using a scary new machine. It’s called the Megaformer, and yes, it’s as intense as it sounds.
Elev8 Studio is on the ninth floor of the Ore Central building, conveniently located between Bonifacio Global High Street and Uptown Mall. I navigated the hallway following the sounds of Selena Gomez, opened the door to the studio and was greeted by smiling faces and a warm “Hey Girl!” from one of the svelte instructors behind the front desk. For the first time in a very long time I didn’t feel at all intimidated by walking into somewhere new (wondering if I’ll be that newbie that receives a round of applause for turning up!).
The studio is flooded with natural light–oh-so-chic with its unique centavo-covered floor (yes, that’s right), cool aqua hues and burnt orange accents. There are lockers and towels in the changing area, but be sure to bring a water bottle and grip socks if you have them, as you work up quite a sweat during the workout and those little babies will keep you from sliding off. Don’t worry, you can also pick up a pair at the studio if you forget!
I’ve tried reformer classes before, but those machines seem archaic compared to the specially-designed Megaformers that are used for the Lagree workout. Developed in the United States by Sebastien Lagree, this 45-minute class has a huge celebrity following, from former first lady Michelle Obama to Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio.
Just like traditional Pilates, Lagree is a high-intensity, low-impact workout designed to tone and sculpt (so no need to worry about bulking up!). The classes vary from Foundation level to High Intensity, but all give you a full body workout incorporating cardio, strength and stamina through a continuous flow of slow, deliberate moves with adjustable resistance.
I trained as a dancer for the best part of 20 years so was expecting to glide through the class without breaking a sweat, but I was quickly mistaken. We started with a core warm-up then transitioned to leg and arm movements. The sweat was already dripping off my nose within the first two minutes and I entered the ‘shake zone’ pretty quickly, so I knew it was working!
After a few seconds of Elevator Lunges, I was definitely reaching for the towel. With no rest between sets, your body stays in the ‘active zone’–meaning you are burning fat at your peak ability and can burn up to 500-800 calories per session. My favorite thing about this workout is the fact that Lagree focuses on longevity and quality rather than a quick-fire class which leaves you gasping for air.
If you want to challenge yourself and build up muscle tone and strength like never before, this is the workout for you. Lagree is a fantastic complement to whatever exercise you’re already doing, whether cardio-focused like spinning or boxing, or weight-training at your neighborhood gym. The instructors recommend anywhere between 2-5 sessions a week depending on your existing regime and personal goals.
Each class can accommodate up to only 10 people, so it’s best to book in advance to guarantee a spot. I highly recommend going with girlfriends. After all, a joy shared is a joy doubled, right?
YOU’RE INVITED! Book a class at 9am, 10am, 11am, 2pm or 3pm on Saturday, September 23 to get fun giveaways and discounted packages. The DJ beat continues at 4pm with bubbles and treats!
